Section 7: Violations & Penalties
A skater assessed a penalty must serve 30 seconds of Jam time in the Penalty Box; the final 10 seconds of that time must be served standing. Penalty time is only tracked during active Jams and in the pauses between them.
Penalties fall into three broad categories under Section 4:
- Contact Penalties (4.1): Impact to Illegal Target Zones such as the back of the body, head/neck, or lower legs (4.1.1); impact delivered using an Illegal Blocking Zone such as the head/neck, forearms, or lower legs (4.1.2); Other Illegal Contact, including blocking while down, out of bounds, or airborne (4.1.3); Multiplayer Blocks, such as skaters forming an illegal wall (4.1.4); and Unsporting Contact, covering actions such as pinning an opponent or dangerous jabbing with an elbow or knee (4.1.5).
- Game Structure Penalties (4.2): Illegal Positioning and taking an unblockable position (4.2.1); Gaining Position, including cutting the track (4.2.2); Interfering with Game Flow (4.2.3); and Other Illegal Procedures (4.2.4).
- Unsporting Conduct / Misconduct (4.3): Disrespect toward participants, deception of officials, abusive behavior, or forceful contact directed at officials.
A skater who accumulates seven penalties over the course of a game fouls out and takes no further part in play. Separately, officials may issue an outright Expulsion for sufficiently dangerous or unsporting acts, which removes the skater from the game immediately; a teammate must serve any remaining associated penalty time on the expelled skater's behalf.
