Section 5: Rules of Play
A game lasts 60 minutes of total play, divided into two 30-minute periods separated by a halftime. Within each period, play is broken into Jams. A Jam can last up to two minutes, and at least 30 seconds must elapse between the end of one Jam and the start of the next.
Each team is allotted three timeouts of 60 seconds each per game, and both teams begin each period with one Official Review, which a team may use to formally challenge a prior officiating decision.
Lead Jammer: The first Jammer to legally establish superior position to the foremost in-play Blocker, after having had the opportunity to earn a pass on all opposing Blockers without committing a penalty, is designated Lead Jammer. The Lead Jammer alone has the authority to call off the Jam before the full two minutes elapse, signaled by repeatedly placing both hands on the hips.
Overtime: If the score is tied at the end of the second period, play is extended by at least one additional Jam. During overtime Jams, the lineup period is extended to 60 seconds, no Lead Jammer is designated, and both Jammers may score on their first earned scoring pass. Additional overtime Jams are played until the score is no longer tied. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
