Section 8: Safety Considerations
WFTDA's rules build safety directly into the structure of legal play rather than treating it purely as an equipment checklist. The prohibition on inline skates and the mandatory use of quad-style skates (Section 1.2) reflects the control and stability requirements of full-contact play on a flat track.
Mandatory protective gear — helmet, mouthguard, wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads — must be worn whenever it can provide the skater additional protection, may not be removed during play, and must not compromise the safety of other participants. Skaters must replace their mouthguard before leaving the Penalty Box, ensuring full protective coverage resumes the instant they re-enter live play.
The Contact Penalty framework in Section 4.1 exists primarily as a safety mechanism: Illegal Target Zones (back of the body, head/neck, lower legs) and Illegal Blocking Zones (head/neck, forearms, lower legs) are defined specifically to discourage the highest-risk categories of contact, and Unsporting Contact (4.1.5) separately penalizes deliberately dangerous actions such as pinning or elbow/knee jabbing.
Following the January 1, 2025 rules update, the Head Referee holds explicit discretionary authority to act on safety concerns as they arise during a game, in addition to their existing authority over expulsions and crew communication — a change WFTDA made specifically to give officials more direct authority to intervene when a safety issue develops in real time.
