Section 5: Rules of Play
There are two primary ways to play Marbles, each with its own set of rules. This rulebook covers the standard variations for casual play.
Ring Toss
- Setup: Players place their marbles outside the ring. The first player to roll a marble into the ring starts the game.
- The Turn: Players take turns rolling their marble toward the opponent's ring. The player must roll from a designated starting point, usually marked on the ground.
- The Shot: The player rolls their marble with the goal of landing it inside the opponent's ring. They can also try to hit the opponent's marble out of the ring.
- Scoring: If a player successfully lands their marble inside the opponent's ring, they score a point. Some variations allow them to take the opponent's marble out of the ring as well.
English (Carom) Marbles
- Setup: Players arrange their marbles in a triangle formation (a "rack") on the playing surface. The rack is usually placed near the center of the court.
- The Turn: Players take turns hitting their marble against the opponent's marbles. The goal is to make contact with at least one of the opponent's marbles.
- The Shot: Players must hit their marble with a specific motion. In casual play, this is usually a simple roll or push from behind the marble.
- Scoring: Points are awarded for every successful hit (carom) made against an opponent's marble. The player must return to their starting position after each shot.
