Section 8: Safety Considerations
Twister involves unusual reaches, unstable positions, close spacing, and occasional falls. Every participant may decline a move, leave the mat, or stop the game at any time. Winning never takes priority over comfort or safety.
Before play
- Inspect the surface and remove nearby obstacles, liquids, and trip hazards.
- Smooth the mat and stop play whenever it wrinkles, slides, or tears.
- Remove sharp jewelry and empty pockets of objects that could injure someone during a fall.
- Warm up gently, particularly the wrists, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.
- Match the number and size of players to the available space.
During play
- Move under control; do not dive, jump, lunge blindly, or force a joint beyond a comfortable range.
- Do not place body weight on another player or trap another player’s limb.
- Keep fingers away from places where they could be stepped on whenever possible.
- Stop immediately if anyone reports pain, numbness, dizziness, shortness of breath, or distress.
- Pause when the mat shifts or when a player becomes entangled.
Age, size, and mobility differences
Closely supervise children and avoid pairings in which a large size difference creates a crushing or collision risk. Players with limited reach, balance, strength, or mobility may use a smaller playing zone, receive separate calls, remain seated beside the mat, use fewer limb categories, or play cooperative mode.
Consent and personal space
Because players may be positioned close together, everyone should consent to the format and may request a reset if a position feels uncomfortable. Accidental proximity is part of the game, but intentional intimate contact, harassment, and ignoring a request to stop are never acceptable.
Ending an unsafe position
The caller should stop the round before a likely collision or uncontrolled fall. Players should release a difficult position slowly and give one another room to stand. Anyone who is injured should stop playing and obtain appropriate assistance; the round result can be abandoned or replayed later.
