Section 5: Rules of Play
Starting the game
- Prepare the playing area and inspect the mat and spinner.
- Select the caller and agree on the game format and any house rules.
- Place all players in their assigned starting positions.
- The caller spins and announces the first clear result.
Completing a call
After a call, every active player moves the named limb to an unoccupied circle of the named color. For example, on “right hand, blue,” each player must place the right hand on an available blue circle. Players choose their own circles; the caller does not assign them.
A circle is occupied when a player’s hand or foot is already resting on it. Two players may not share a circle. If players reach for the same vacant circle at nearly the same time, the player who establishes clear contact first keeps it. If the caller cannot determine who arrived first, neither player receives priority and the call is spun again.
If the named limb is already on the called color, the player must move it to a different unoccupied circle of that color. Other limbs remain where they are unless a temporary lift is specifically allowed.
Position and movement
- Only hands and feet may support the player on the mat during normal play.
- A hand or foot may occupy only one circle at a time.
- A player may reach over or under another player without making unsafe contact.
- A limb remains in its new position once the move is completed.
- Players may rotate a planted hand or foot and adjust weight without leaving its circle.
If another limb completely blocks the route to a legal circle, the caller may allow that blocking limb to lift briefly. The player must move the called limb first and immediately return the lifted limb to its original circle. This exception should be used only when necessary, not to improve balance.
No available circle
If every circle of the called color is occupied, the caller announces “full” and spins again. If a circle becomes available before the next result is announced, that does not revive the canceled call.
End of a round
A player leaves the mat when eliminated. Remaining players keep their existing positions unless the caller pauses play for safety. The round ends when only one player remains, or when all remaining players agree that the position cannot continue safely.
Common variations
- Team Twister: Partners play on the mat together. A team remains active while both partners remain legal; the last surviving team wins.
- Head-to-head teams: Teams play separate rounds on the same starting setup. The team lasting longer wins.
- Timed calls: Players receive five or ten seconds to complete each instruction.
- Caller’s choice: On a predetermined spinner result, the caller chooses the color while retaining the selected limb.
- Air move: A special result requires the named limb to be held off the mat until that limb is called again. Use this only with players who can do so safely.
- Cooperative mode: The group tries to complete a target number of spins without anyone falling; eliminated players are not used.
