Section 7: Violations/Penalties
- Catch/trap violation: If the Deflector catches, traps, or cleanly cradles the disc (rather than deflecting it in continuous motion) before it strikes the can or passes through the slot, no points are scored on that throw. The disc is dead and play moves to the next turn.
- Foot fault: A Thrower who steps well beyond their own can's throwing area at the moment of release (commonly enforced as moving noticeably closer to the target can to gain an unfair distance advantage) forfeits that throw, per house-rule agreement among most casual groups; there is no universal, precisely codified foot line in casual play, so groups should agree on an acceptable release zone before starting.
- Can displacement: If a Deflector's body or an illegal action (rather than the disc itself) knocks the can over or out of position, any resulting "hit" is voided and does not score; the can is reset and play continues on the next turn.
- Out-of-turn throw: A disc thrown out of the correct rotation order is a dead throw with no points scored; the correct Thrower repeats the turn.
- Interference: Deliberate interference by a non-participating player (e.g., a teammate or bystander touching the disc) voids the throw with no points scored, and the disc is re-thrown by the same Thrower.
- Delay of game: In timed or tournament formats, teams that take an excessive amount of time between throws may be assessed a warning or a forfeited turn at the discretion of the group or event organizer, since there is no official shot clock in standard recreational play.
- Disputes: Because KanJam is self-officiated, any disputed call (e.g., whether a deflection or a catch occurred) should be resolved by mutual agreement between all four players before the next throw; a neutral bystander may be asked to make the call if the players cannot agree.
