Section 3: Playing Area
KanJam is played on any flat, open area of grass, sand, or hard-packed ground roughly 60–70 feet long and at least 15–20 feet wide, though the game is forgiving of imperfect or irregular terrain.
- Can placement: The two cans are set up facing each other, with their slots oriented toward the opposing thrower, at a standard distance of 50 feet (15.24 m) apart, measured center-to-center.
- Throwing position: Each thrower stands directly beside — or just behind — their own team's can and throws from that spot toward the opposing can. A player does not need a fixed "throwing line," but must keep at least one foot in contact with the ground within a reasonable distance of the can when releasing the disc (see Section 7 for foot-fault house rules).
- Buffer zone: Because the deflector stands immediately next to the target can, a buffer of at least 5–10 feet on either side and behind each can is recommended to give the deflector room to move and to keep spectators safely clear of errant discs.
- Surface considerations: Level, mowed grass or firm sand is ideal. Sloped or uneven ground can cause cans to tip; on windy days, stake or weight the cans, particularly the goal facing directly into the wind.
