Section 8: Safety Considerations
- Playing surface: Choose a flat, open area free of holes, roots, sprinkler heads, rocks, or other tripping hazards, since Deflectors often move quickly and unpredictably to redirect an incoming disc.
- Clear zone: Keep spectators, pets, and other bystanders well clear of the throwing lanes and the area behind each can, as missed discs and deflections can travel unpredictably in any direction.
- Disc impact awareness: A hard plastic flying disc traveling at speed can cause facial or eye injury if it strikes a player who is not expecting it; Deflectors should keep their eyes on the disc at all times and be ready to duck or step aside rather than forcing a risky deflection.
- Can stability: Secure cans on windy days or soft/uneven ground (sand, mulch, slopes) with stakes, sandbags, or by choosing a more sheltered location, to prevent tipping that could cause a trip hazard or an unfair bounce.
- Weather and hydration: As an outdoor game often played at tailgates, beaches, or in direct sun, players should wear appropriate footwear, use sunscreen, and stay hydrated during extended play sessions, especially in hot weather.
- Alcohol and judgment: KanJam is frequently played in social settings where alcohol is present; groups should exercise caution, as impaired throwing and deflecting increases the risk of accidental disc strikes to players or bystanders.
- Youth play: When children are playing, consider using a softer or lighter "beach"-style disc, shortening the throwing distance, and providing adult supervision, particularly around the deflecting position closest to the incoming disc.
