Section 5: Rules of Play
The core mechanics of Freeze Tag revolve around the cycle of tagging, freezing, and unfreezing. Understanding these rules is essential for fair play.
Tagging (Freezing)
- The Touch: An "It" player must physically touch a "Safe" player to freeze them. A light tap on the shoulder, arm, or back is sufficient.
- The Freeze: Once touched, the "Safe" player is immediately frozen. They must stop moving completely and stand still.
- Tagging the Frozen: If an "It" player touches a frozen teammate, nothing happens. The frozen player remains frozen and cannot be unfrozen by the same "It" player again.
Unfreezing
This is the unique mechanic that distinguishes Freeze Tag from standard Tag.
- The Unfreeze Touch: A "Safe" player from the same team as the frozen player must touch their frozen teammate to unfreeze them.
- The Release: Once the frozen player is touched by a teammate, they are immediately unfrozen and become "Safe" again. They can now join the chase or defend.
- Tagging a Frozen Player: If an "It" player touches a frozen teammate, the frozen player remains frozen. Only a teammate who is currently "Safe" can unfreeze them.
Players must be careful not to run while tagged. If a player runs after being touched, they are considered "It" (frozen) until they are unfrozen by a teammate.
