Section 8: Safety Considerations
Safety is paramount in tetherball due to the nature of hitting a ball against a pole and rope. Players should follow these guidelines to prevent injury.
Pole Padding
The pole should be padded or covered with soft material to prevent injury if the ball hits it hard or if a player accidentally touches it. The padding should be secure and not interfere with the rope wrapping.
Rope Tension
The rope should be checked regularly for wear and tear. A frayed or loose rope can snap or whip unpredictably, causing injury to players' hands or faces. The rope should be kept taut but not too tight, allowing for a natural wrap.
Clear Area
The area around the court should be clear of obstacles, spectators, or other players. Only authorized players should be on the court during play. Spectators should stand behind a designated line to avoid being hit by the ball.
Fall Prevention
Players should be careful when running and hitting the ball. They should avoid running into each other or the pole. If a player falls, they should get up safely and not continue playing if injured.
Age Appropriateness
Tetherball can be dangerous for very young children. The ball should be soft and lightweight, and the pole height should be adjusted to match the players' size. Supervision is recommended for children under 10 years old.
