Section 2: Equipment
To play a standard game of tetherball, you will need three specific items. These are the only mandatory pieces required to start a match.
The Ball
You need a ball that is soft enough to hit safely but heavy enough to have momentum. A rubber or plastic tetherball is ideal, often featuring a textured surface for better grip and aerodynamics. The ball should be roughly the size of a tennis ball or slightly larger, depending on the age group playing. It must be securely attached to one end of the rope.
The Rope
A strong rope connects the ball to the top of the pole. The rope must be long enough so that when it is fully wrapped around the pole, there is still some slack or tension. Standard ropes are usually 20 to 30 feet long, though shorter lengths can be used for smaller poles or younger players. The rope should be durable to withstand the force of being hit repeatedly.
The Pole
A vertical pole is the central anchor of the game. It must be sturdy and securely anchored to the ground so it does not tip over when hit hard. The pole should be straight and vertical, with a smooth surface to allow the rope to wrap easily without snagging. The height of the pole is critical for gameplay balance.
