Section 5: Rules of Play
The rules govern how the game is played from start to finish. These ensure fairness and prevent dangerous play.
Serving
The game begins with a serve. The player on the left side of the court serves first (in singles) or Team A serves first (in doubles). The server must hit the ball into their opponent's side of the court. A serve is valid only if it lands within the boundaries and does not hit the pole directly.
Hitting the Ball
Players must hit the ball with their hands or arms. Using feet, knees, elbows (below the elbow), or any other body part to hit the ball is a foul. Players cannot catch, hold, or throw the ball; they must keep it in play by hitting it. The ball must be hit with a swinging motion, not just pushed or thrown.
The Wrap
The goal is to wrap the rope around the pole. Each time the ball hits the pole and wraps the rope once, it counts as a point or turn. The rope must wrap completely around the pole to count. If the ball hits the pole but does not wrap (e.g., it bounces off), no point is awarded.
Movement
Players are allowed to move around the court freely, but they must stay within the boundary lines. Stepping on or over the line is considered out of bounds. Players cannot touch the pole, the rope, or the net (if used) with their hands or body. They can only touch these objects when hitting the ball.
The Wall
In some variations, a wall is placed behind the court. If the ball hits the wall and bounces back into play, it is still in play. However, if the ball hits the wall and stays out of bounds, the point is awarded to the opponent. The wall should be positioned so it does not interfere with the pole or the players' movement.
