Section 7: Violations & Penalties
Because Musical Chairs is a casual game, penalties should be simple and proportionate. The organizer may first give a reminder for minor or accidental conduct. Deliberate, repeated, or unsafe conduct may result in elimination from the current game.
Movement Violations
- Stopping, hovering, or moving unusually slowly beside a preferred seat while music plays.
- Reversing direction, cutting across the seat arrangement, or leaving the marked route to gain an advantage.
- Sitting before the music stops or failing to resume movement after a clear instruction.
- Running when the announced movement is walking.
For a minor first occurrence, the organizer may warn the player and replay the round if the conduct affected the result. A player who gains a seat through a deliberate movement violation may be treated as the player without a lawful seat and eliminated.
Seat Violations
- Holding, moving, tilting, or turning a seat.
- Touching or guarding a seat to reserve it before the stop.
- Claiming more than one seat or refusing to leave a seat after a ruling.
- Pulling a seat away while another player is attempting to sit.
A seat obtained through these actions does not count as lawfully secured. If the violation creates uncertainty or a safety hazard, the organizer should stop play, restore the arrangement, and replay the round or eliminate the responsible player when the conduct was deliberate.
Contact and Interference
- Pushing, tripping, grabbing, elbowing, hip-checking, or pulling another player.
- Using the body to pin another player against furniture or block the route.
- Interfering with active players after elimination.
- Distracting the music operator or tampering with the music controls.
Unsafe physical contact should result in immediate stoppage. The responsible player may be eliminated without a warning. Serious or repeated conduct may result in removal from the activity entirely.
Organizer Error
If the wrong number of seats is present, the stop signal is ambiguous, a seat tips or breaks, or outside interference materially affects play, the round is void. Restore the proper setup and replay the round with the same active players.
