Section 5: Rules of Play
Setup
- Count the participating players.
- Arrange exactly one fewer seat than the number of active players.
- Explain the route, direction, permitted movement, stop signal, tie procedure, and safety expectations.
- Place all players on the route outside the seats.
Starting and Moving
The organizer begins the round by starting the music. While it plays, every player must continue traveling in the announced direction around the full arrangement. Unless a variation has been declared, players walk at a steady pace and remain in their relative flow instead of stopping beside a preferred seat.
Players must not sit, squat over a seat, touch a seat to reserve it, drag a hand along chair backs, or block another player. Brief incidental contact caused by ordinary movement does not decide possession of a seat.
The Music Stop
When the music stops, players may immediately move to and sit on any unoccupied seat they can reach lawfully. A seat is secured when one player has established a stable seated position on it without pushing, pulling, or displacing another player.
Standing beside a chair, touching it with a hand, placing only a foot on it, or attempting to hold it does not claim the seat. Two players may not share one seat in standard play. The player who does not secure a seat is eliminated.
Between Rounds
After the eliminated player leaves the playing area, the organizer removes one seat. The number of seats must therefore remain one fewer than the number of active players. Remaining players return to the route, and the next round begins when the music restarts.
Final Round
When two players and one seat remain, they travel around that seat under the same rules. The player who lawfully secures it when the music stops wins the game.
Unclear Stops and Ties
If the music cannot be heard clearly, stops because of equipment trouble, or restarts immediately by accident, the organizer may declare a false stop. No player is eliminated, everyone leaves the seats, and the round is replayed with the same players and seats.
If two players appear to reach a seat simultaneously and the organizer cannot fairly identify sole possession, neither player should wrestle for it. The organizer clears the disputed seat and replays the round among all players who were active at that stop.
Common Variations
- Non-elimination: Remove a seat each round, but allow every player to continue. Players must safely share the remaining designated spaces, encouraging cooperation rather than elimination.
- Musical spots: Replace chairs with flat floor markers or cushions. A player claims a location by placing both feet or the agreed body position fully within it.
- Movement challenge: Require skipping, dancing, tiptoeing, or another safe movement while music plays. Running should not be used in a confined area.
- Reverse direction: The organizer changes the direction between rounds, never during a round unless a clear signal and safe procedure were announced beforehand.
- Team relay: Teams send one player into each heat and earn points based on finishing position.
- Last-player challenge: An eliminated player completes a harmless task, such as naming a song or performing a dance move, before joining the spectators.
