Section 2: Equipment
To play Double Dutch, you will need two jump ropes. Each player assigned to turn the ropes must hold one rope in each hand, meaning there are two distinct ropes involved in every game. The ropes should be flexible and durable to withstand the constant swinging motion.
Ropes
- Quantity: Two ropes are required for the game. One rope is held by each of the two turners.
- Length: The length of the ropes depends on the height of the turners. Generally, the handle should reach just above the elbow when standing with arms at your side.
- Material: Nylon, cotton, or plastic-coated ropes are common choices. Nylon is preferred for its durability and speed, while cotton provides a softer feel.
- Handles: Handles should be comfortable to grip and secure enough not to slip out of hands during vigorous play.
Footwear
While casual play might allow for barefoot jumping on soft surfaces, this rulebook mandates footwear for safety and performance. Players must wear closed-toe shoes with good traction to prevent slipping on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt. Proper footwear protects feet from rope burns and reduces the impact stress on joints during jumping.
