Section 2: Equipment
Skis. Competitors use event-specific skis. Slalom is skied on a single mono-ski with a fin and boot bindings; Tricks is contested on a shorter, finless (or minimal-fin) trick ski that allows the skier to spin and surface-slide; Jump uses a wider, longer pair (or single) of skis designed for stability and lift at high speed off the ramp. Equipment must conform to the general construction limits set out in the rulebook's equipment provisions.
Tow rope and handle. A tournament tow rope is a mandatory, standardized item: the regular (full) competition length is 18.25 metres (59.9 ft) measured from the boat pylon to the ski handle. For Slalom, ropes are fitted with pre-spliced loops permitting rapid shortening through the official progression — 18.25 m, 16.00 m, 14.25 m, 13.00 m, 12.00 m, 11.25 m, 10.75 m, 10.25 m, and 9.75 m — as a skier successfully completes a pass.
Tow boat. An IWWF-approved inboard tow boat with an approved speed-control/speedometer system is required to pull the skier at the boat speeds mandated for each event and division. The boat's pylon (tow point) height and wake characteristics are subject to approval to ensure a consistent tow for competitors.
Helmet. A suitable helmet is mandatory for competitors in the Jump event, given the high speeds and fall risk associated with ramp take-offs and landings.
Buoyancy vest (jacket). A properly fitted buoyancy/flotation vest is required safety equipment for all competitors across Slalom, Tricks, and Jump.
