Section 4: Players & Officials
Pictionary works best with four or more players divided into teams of similar size. Two players may compete individually by alternating drawing and guessing, but team play creates the intended cooperative experience.
Player Roles
- Drawer: Secretly reads the selected prompt and draws clues for the active team. The drawer must obey all communication restrictions.
- Guessers: Call out possible answers during their team's active turn. Guessers may make any number of attempts before time expires.
- Opposing players: Observe silently, help confirm fair play, and prepare for their next turn.
The drawing role rotates within each team in a fixed order. Late-arriving players join at the end of their team's rotation. A player who cannot draw during an assigned turn may exchange places with the next teammate, but should return to the rotation at the next reasonable opportunity.
Officials
No formal official is required. The group should designate a timekeeper and scorekeeper; one person may perform both duties. A non-playing host may also serve in these roles. The timekeeper announces the start and end of each turn, while the scorekeeper records points and tracks whether teams have received equal numbers of turns.
Disputes
Players should settle disagreements promptly and in good faith. The scorekeeper may ask the drawer to reveal the card after the turn and compare it with the accepted guess. If the group cannot agree whether a guess was close enough, a simple majority of non-drawing players decides. A tied vote results in no point unless the group agreed on another method before play.
