Section 8: Safety Considerations
- Stand clear of the pitching lane: Only the player currently throwing should stand in the direct line between the two boards; spectators, kids, and pets should stay to the sides or well behind the boards to avoid being struck by an errant bag.
- Announce your throw: A quick verbal cue ("throwing!") before pitching helps prevent someone from stepping into the lane at the wrong moment, especially at crowded tailgates or parties.
- Secure the boards: Make sure boards are on stable, level ground and not prone to tipping or sliding, particularly on uneven grass, near steps, or close to a fire pit, grill, pool edge, or road.
- Weather awareness: Wet or slick boards can become a slip hazard for anyone stepping near them, and wet corn-filled bags can grow heavier and moldy over time — synthetic resin-fill bags are the safer, longer-lasting choice for frequent outdoor or humid-weather play.
- Alcohol and moderation: Cornhole is a staple of tailgates and cookouts where alcohol is often present; players should pace themselves so throws remain controlled and the pitching lane stays predictable and safe for everyone nearby.
- Kids and pets: Bags are a manageable size and weight for most ages, but young children should be supervised near the boards, and pets should be kept clear of the pitching lane, as a fast-thrown bag can startle or strike them.
