Section 4: Players/Officials
Cornhole can be played one-on-one (singles) or two-on-two (doubles), the most common recreational format. In doubles, partners stand at opposite boards for the entire game — rather than both partners standing together, one partner throws from board A while the other throws from board B, and they alternate boards only between games, not between rounds.
No formal officials are required for casual play. Players are expected to self-officiate, call their own bag placements honestly, and agree on any disputed calls by mutual discussion — a hallmark of cornhole's laid-back, honor-system culture. For larger backyard tournaments or leagues, a designated scorekeeper or rotating "board judge" can be assigned to confirm bag positions and tally points, especially useful when bags land close to the hole or overlap the board's edge.
Groups are free to organize brackets, round-robins, or simple best-of-three matches depending on the number of participants and time available.
