Picking up the marker
Why People Get This Wrong
People often assume that if they land in a single square with their marker, they must always step out of it on their return journey, which leads them to believe they should step into an adjacent square rather than keep their normal footing and stay within the single square. However, the rule actually allows for stepping back into the same square as long as it maintains their normal foot position.
Official Verdict
For a marker in a single square, stop on the return journey in the row immediately before reaching that square. Keep the normal footing for that row: one foot in a single square, or one foot in each square of a pair.
