8.4 Red Flag and Race Suspension — Sporting Regulations, Article B5.14

Why People Get This Wrong

But actually, under this rule, the "Competitor" encompasses the whole constructor, which includes all the engineers, mechanics, and support staff involved in building and maintaining the racing car.

These unwritten rules are genuinely debated — even experienced Formula 1 players disagree on whether they still apply or have become outdated.

Defend with one move, not repeated weaving

Drivers are expected to make one decisive move to defend their line, then hold it. Repeatedly weaving across the track to block a pursuing car is considered dangerous and unsporting—'chopping' a rival multiple times violates the spirit of wheel-to-wheel combat regardless of whether the stewards intervene. This cultural norm predated its eventual partial codification in the sporting regulations.

Why People Disagree

Exactly when multiple direction changes constitute illegal blocking versus legal defensive driving is argued constantly; steward inconsistency fuels the debate.

The distinction between 'one move to defend' and 'blocking' has generated intense stewards debates throughout the DRS era.

Don't move under braking when defending

Changing your defensive line mid-braking zone—when a following car has already committed—is considered one of the most dangerous and dishonorable moves in racing. It removes the pursuer's ability to react. The cultural expectation that defenders choose their line before braking points is strong, even though stewards have only partially codified it.

Lapped cars yield promptly and cleanly under blue flags

Beyond the written blue-flag rule (comply within three waving flags or face penalty), the cultural expectation is that backmarkers move decisively and without drama—not making the leader lose time or placing them in danger. Holding up a championship-contending car through a key sequence, even technically within the letter of the regulation, is frowned upon strongly.

Why People Disagree

When a lapped driver is also racing for constructor points, absolute deference to the leader creates a competitive conflict. The exact extent of the obligation is debated.

Verstappen's complaints about Lando Norris in the 2023 Las Vegas GP and recurring blue-flag controversies reflect tension between teams racing for constructor points and respecting leaders.

Give back a position gained by going off-track

If a driver overtakes by cutting a corner or leaving the track to gain an advantage, the expectation—before stewards enforce it—is that they hand the position back promptly and cleanly. Waiting to be penalized rather than self-policing is seen as gamesmanship that wastes everyone's time and disrespects the sporting spirit.

Why People Disagree

With stewards now almost always intervening, some argue the 'give it back' custom has been replaced entirely by formal enforcement, reducing the need for self-policing.

Track-limits enforcement has grown increasingly contentious at circuits like Silverstone, Spa, and Barcelona, where the advantage of cutting certain corners is measurable.

First-lap incidents receive more latitude from drivers and stewards

A broadly understood norm in F1 is that contact on the opening lap—where the field is compressed, tire temperatures are low, and positions are being established—is judged more leniently than identical contact on lap 30. Drivers know they can race harder for position at turn 1 on lap 1 than at any other moment in the race.

Why People Disagree

Critics argue the first-lap convention has become an excuse for reckless driving; defenders say it reflects the reality of racing from a standing start.

This has always been informal; stewards have codified somewhat more flexibility in their guidelines, but it began as cultural consensus.
