6. Results, Draws & Scoring
Winning
- Checkmate ends the game immediately, provided the move producing it was legal (Art. 5.1.1)
- Resignation: a player who resigns loses immediately, unless the position is one in which the opponent cannot possibly checkmate (Art. 5.1.2)
- Time: a player who does not complete the prescribed moves in the allotted time loses, except where checkmate is impossible (Art. 6.9)
Draws
- Stalemate: the player to move has no legal move and is not in check (Art. 5.2.1)
- Dead position: neither player can possibly checkmate (Art. 5.2.2)
- Agreement: permitted once each player has made at least one move (Art. 5.2.3)
- Threefold repetition: drawn on correct claim by the player to move (Art. 9.2.1-9.2.2)
- Fifty-move rule: drawn on correct claim when the last 50 moves by each player included no capture and no pawn move (Art. 9.3.2)
- Automatic draws: fivefold repetition (Art. 9.6.1) and seventy-five moves by each player without capture or pawn move (Art. 9.6.2) are drawn without a claim
