Section 1: Introduction
This rulebook summarizes the World Axe Throwing League (WATL) WATL Official Rules, edition 2026 Season 3 (updated July 8, 2026), published at worldaxethrowingleague.com/axe-throwing-rules/. The rules cover all WATL-sanctioned competition in three disciplines: (Overview; Sections D and E)
- Hatchet – individual play, 10 throws per game. (Overview; Sections D and E)
- Big Axe – individual play, 7 throws per game. (Section D)
- Hatchet Duals – teams of two, 5 throws per game, with two axes thrown simultaneously. (Section E)
2026 changes. WATL's "2026 WATL Rules Updates" describe no major gameplay changes for the 2026 competitive year (the league's ninth). Gameplay changes include: (Overview; Sections D and E)
- In sudden death, distance measurement now begins on the third attempt rather than the second. (Section B.4, Sudden Death)
- A foot fault may be dismissed at the Lane Judge's discretion, particularly when it occurs after all competitors in the lane have thrown and their axes have come to rest. (Section B.3, Fault Lines)
Where this summary and the official document differ, the official WATL document governs. (Overview; Sections D and E)
Section 2: Equipment
The official rules specify the following axe limits. (Section A.1)
Hatchet axe
- Maximum weight: 3 lb (1.36 kg). (Section A.1)
- Maximum length: 19 in (48.26 cm), measured from the top of the eye. (Section A.1)
- Maximum bit width: 4 in (10.16 cm). (Section A.1)
Big axe
Bit requirement: axes may have only one sharp bit. No sharpened bits, spikes, or blades are allowed on the poll. (Section A.1)
Target: the target center is 60 in from the ground. Its scoring zones are described in Section 6. (Section A.4)
Section 3: Playing Area
A WATL lane must meet these minimums: (Section A.5)
- Ceiling height: 12 ft clear. (Section A.5)
- Width: 12 ft, with targets evenly distributed. (Section A.5)
- Length: 15 ft, which allows for a 12 ft fault line plus safe throwing space. (Section A.5)
- Big Axe lanes require a minimum length of 20 ft. (Section A.5)

Section 4: Players & Officials
Competitors
Hatchet and Big Axe are contested by individuals. Hatchet Duals is contested by teams of two. Hatchet play is divided into three divisions that differ in how scoring zones close: (Section C)
- Recreational: non-Killshot zones remain open; Killshot closing still applies. (Section C)
- Amateur: individual bullseyes and 5-rings close after being hit. (Section C)
- Professional: the entire ring closes upon any hit within that 5-ring. (Section C)
Judges
Section 5: Rules of Play
Game length
- Hatchet: 10 throws per game. (Section B.4)
- Big Axe: 7 throws per game. (Section D)
- Hatchet Duals: 5 throws, with two axes thrown simultaneously. (Section E)
Timing
A competitor has 10 seconds from the completion of the opponent's throw. (Section B.4)
Killshots
Killshots must be called before throwing. Each hatchet game allows 2 Killshot calls. (Section B.5, Key Rules; Sections D and E)
Drops
A dropped axe scores 0 points. In Hatchet, a drop awards one additional Killshot, except on throw 10; Big Axe and Duals have no extra Killshot for drops. (Section B.5, Key Rules; Sections D and E)
Sudden death
A game tied after regulation goes to Killshot rotation rounds, and the first to score higher wins. Distance measurement is used from the third attempt onward: if both competitors miss, the closest measurable distance wins. (Section B.4)
Section 6: Scoring
All scoring is by touch: the scoring area of the axe that directly contacts a valid scoring zone of the target. Black ring boundaries score the lower adjacent value. The zones for hatchet are as follows. (Section B.5)
Whether a zone stays open after being hit depends on the division (see Section 4). (Section B.5)
Section 7: Violations & Penalties
- Fault: if a competitor touches the lane, equipment, or building beyond the fault line while the lane is active and before scores are called, the throw scores 0 points with no Killshot bonus. A Lane Judge may dismiss a fault under the 2026 change described in Section 1. (Sections B.3 and B.5)
- Drop: the throw scores 0 points; Hatchet awards +1 additional Killshot, except on throw 10. Big Axe and Duals do not award this bonus. (Sections B.5, D and E)
- Conduct: threatening behavior, bullying, and unsportsmanlike conduct are treated with zero tolerance. (Section F.2)
Conduct penalties escalate: (1) verbal warning, (2) zero score and a loss for the most recent game, (3) suspension from the tournament or season. Officials may bypass this sequence. Violations may be reported confidentially to [email protected]. (Section F.6)
Section 8: Safety Considerations
- No individual may crowd, surround, or otherwise interfere with a judge while scoring. (Section B.3)
- Lane dimensions, including the 12 ft fault line for hatchet and 15 ft for Big Axe, provide safe throwing space and clearance. (Sections A.5 and B.3)
- Only single-bit axes are permitted; sharpened polls, spikes, and extra blades are prohibited. (Section A.1)
- The Head Judge may interpret the rules in the interest of the community and of fair play. (Overview, Head Judge Authority)
