Temporary taxi-squad rule introduced for the COVID-shortened 56-game season — each team allowed an extra traveling group of four to six players, including one goaltender, designed to handle COVID-related call-ups. Regular season reduced to 56 games with realigned divisional play; sixteen-team playoff format with division-based seeding rather than conference-based seeding.

Puck-over-glass delay-of-game penalty added to the video-review list (deflection determination only, not judgment calls). Defensive team prohibited from a line change after its own goaltender accidentally dislodges the net. Following an icing, offensive centers receive a faceoff-violation warning equivalent to defensive players. New bench-minor penalty path: players sitting on the boards with skates exposed receive a warning first, then an unsportsmanlike-conduct bench minor on subsequent violations.
