Euchre is a fast partnership card game in which four players compete as two teams. Partners sit opposite one another. Each hand has five tricks, and one suit becomes trump. The team that chooses trump, called the makers, tries to win at least three tricks; the opposing team, called the defenders,...
Under this option, a player whose five-card hand contains one ace and no kings, queens, or jacks may reveal it and call for a redeal. Some groups omit the ace requirement and allow any hand with no face cards.
Count the deck before beginning and whenever an irregularity is suspected. There must be exactly six printed ranks in each of the four suits.

Starting with the player on the dealer's left and proceeding clockwise, the dealer gives each player five cards face down. Cards are traditionally dealt in packets of two and three, with the packet sizes alternated or otherwise distributed so everyone receives five.
Some groups allow either defender to play alone against a lone maker. The defender announces this before the opening lead, and the defender's partner sits out.
Some groups add sevens and eights for a 32-card deck, especially with more than four players. Added ranks fall below the nine unless the group agrees otherwise.
A player dealt an unusually weak hand may request a redeal. A common definition is a hand containing only nines and tens, while another permits a hand containing three nines or three tens.
When the upcard's suit is selected, the dealer takes the upcard into hand and discards any one card face down to the kitty, restoring a five-card hand. The dealer may discard the upcard itself after picking it up, although doing so is rarely useful.
A player may go alone whether that player ordered the dealer, named a suit in the second round, or is the dealer accepting the upcard. The announcement must be clear and timely; once the first card is led, a maker may not newly declare a lone hand.
A player with a qualifying weak hand may place three cards face down and exchange them for the three face-down cards in the kitty, leaving the upcard untouched. A common qualification is holding three nines or tens.
